WASHINGTON — The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic received a five-star overall score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, besting one of its chief competitors, the 2012 Ford Fiesta.
The Fiesta received a four-star overall score for safety from NHTSA.
The Sonic got an overall vehicle score of five stars, even though it received four out of five stars in NHTSA’s rollover crash test. Fiesta also got four stars in the rollover crash test.
The jury is still out among many of Sonic’s other competitors in terms of federal crash testing. The 2012 Kia Rio has not yet been rated. NHTSA is providing only partial ratings on the 2012 Nissan Versa. The Versa sedan is not rated, while the Versa hatchback has received three out of five stars in the frontal crash test and four out of five stars in the rollover category.
The 2012 Honda Fit has yet to be fully rated. It has received four stars in the rollover category, according to NHTSA.
The Sonic is also one of 25 small cars to get the designation of Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Word of the Sonic’s stellar performance in federal crash testing comes just days after the car was recalled for missing brake pads by NHTSA.
Inside Line says: The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic shines in a key safety category.
