2013 Ford Fusion Will Feature Lane-Keeping Technology

Just the Facts:

  • The all-new 2013 Ford Fusion will be equipped with technology that helps drivers stay alert and prevent them from drifting out of a lane.
  • The Lane Keeping System uses a digital camera mounted on the windshield near the rearview mirror to detect veering in lanes, which causes a vibration in the steering wheel, notifying drivers to correct the course or seek rest if they’re drowsy.
  • Ford says the 2013 Fusion is the first mainstream midsize sedan in North America to offer this technology, which is usually reserved for luxury rides.

DEARBORN, Michigan — The all-new 2013 Ford Fusion will be equipped with technology that helps drivers stay alert and prevent them from drifting out of a lane.

The Lane Keeping System uses a digital camera mounted on the windshield near the rearview mirror to detect veering in lanes, which causes a vibration in the steering wheel, notifying drivers to correct the course or seek rest if they’re drowsy.

This safety feature is usually found in luxury vehicles. Ford says the 2013 Fusion will be the first mainstream midsize sedan in North America to offer this technology.

Ford, which will debut the 2013 Fusion next week at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, will roll out the Lane Keeping System on a wide range of its vehicles over the next several years, including the 2013 Explorer.

“This technology is (typically) found in more expensive vehicles, but even in a midsize sedan, people want their creature comforts,” said Octavio Navarro, Ford car communications manager.

Navarro said pricing on the system hasn’t been determined yet, but he expects it to be part of a technology package available on the Fusion.

Inside Line says: The 2013 Ford Fusion uses safety as a selling point.
