Detroit motor show: BMW M5 gets a manual

The BMW M5 will be offered with a manual gearbox, it has been confirmed at today's Detroit motor show. BMW said the six-speed manual gearbox will be available this summer.

It will be offered as a no-cost alternative to the seven-speed M-DCT double clutch gearbox found in the standard F10 M5.

The manual transmission was a popular choice in the previous generation of the M5, but European buyers were only offered the automatic gearbox, and it appears likely that arrangement will remain for the latest model.

While the manual gearbox has one less gear than the auto, BMW says the ratios have been optimised for acceleration, flexibility and fuel economy, although no further information has been announced. The gearbox will retain the M differential and final drive ratio of the automatic.

The manual M5 will feature a short-throw gear linkage and a leather back-lit shift knob.
