NEW DELHI — The Ford EcoSport compact SUV was unveiled on Wednesday at the New Delhi Auto Expo 2012 show, with the automaker saying it will eventually be sold in nearly 100 markets worldwide.
Ford said the EcoSport will be produced in Brazil, India and other markets to be announced at a later time.
The EcoSport is the second of eight new global models that Ford plans to launch in India.
“The EcoSport is a significant linchpin in Ford’s aggressive global plan to achieve its goal of increasing worldwide sales by nearly 50 percent by mid-decade to 8 million vehicles a year,” said Ford in a statement.
The EcoSport was first launched in South America in 2003. The new version was engineered at the Ford Development Center in Camacari, Brazil, a hub for the Dearborn automaker’s compact car development.
The EcoSport marks the India rollout of the company’s new three-cylinder 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine.
Ford’s smallest engine will be made available in vehicles sold in China, Europe, North America and other regions, said the company.
