DETROIT — It’s just a fantasy at this point, but General Motors on Wednesday showed off some interactive rear window concepts that go far beyond DVD players and I Spy.
One concept allows passengers to share messages with passengers in other vehicles in what developers are calling “virtual bumper stickers.” Another features “Otto,” a cartoon character that is projected over passing scenery and flies faster if the car speeds up.
“A new concept in rear seat entertainment technology that uses the windows themselves could replace squirminess and snoozing with interactive scribbling, sweeping and pinching,” said GM in a statement.
GM noted that “smart glass” has been seen in cars in movies such as Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The concepts use motion and optical sensor technology to turn standard window glass into a multi-touch and gesture-sensitive surface.
“If such interactive windows were put into automotive production they likely would use electronically charged ‘smart glass’ technology, which is capable of variable states of translucence and transparency, and can reflect projected images,” it said.
GM’s Windows of Opportunity Project was done in conjunction with the Future Lab at Israel’s Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. The goal of the project was to help rear-seat passengers — especially children — “have a richer experience on the road.”
