"Dragon Tattoo" Brands Lotus Works IndyCar Team
- Lotus has named Dragon Racing its factory-supported IndyCar team.
- Dragon, partly owned by Jay Penske, was established in 2007.
- It is one of several teams that will use the new 2.2-liter Lotus V6 engine.
BIRMINGHAM, England — Lotus Racing is using the Autosport International racing show to announce that Dragon Racing will be its factory-supported entry in 2012 Izod IndyCar Series competition.
The team, founded in 2007 by Jay Penske and Stephen Luczo as Luczo Dragon Racing, will be rebranded as Lotus Dragon Racing.
The name of the team enjoys by association the public visibility triggered by the release last month of the movie Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, based on the novel penned by Stieg Larsson and published after his death in November 2004.
Team co-founder Penske is the son of auto racing magnate Roger Penske, whose IndyCar team facilitated the Dragon team’s first entry in the 2007 Indianapolis 500.
Lotus will be one of three manufacturers supplying engines that will power the new-generation Dallara chassis in IndyCar races this year. Lotus Racing, part of Lotus Cars Limited, confirmed its plan to participate last fall.
Sebastian Bourdais and Katherine Legge have been announced as drivers for Lotus Dragon.
Other teams that plan to use Lotus power include Bryan Herta Autosport (Alex Tagliani), Dreyer & Reinbold Racing (drivers to be announced), HVM Racing (Simona de Silvestro) and MSR Indy (driver to be announced).
Other engine suppliers include Honda, which has furnished the 3.5-liter normally aspirated V8s used by IndyCar since 2006, and Chevrolet. All the new engines are 2.2-liter turbocharged V6s.
Inside Line says: Colin Chapman’s Lotus brand has a brief but bright history in IndyCar competition, highlighted by Jim Clark’s win in the 1965 Indy 500. That was in a Lotus chassis powered by a Ford V8. The foray in 2012 is new territory for the company as an engine manufacturer. The power plants will be engineered by Engine Developments Ltd., better known as Judd.
