Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid concept

Volvo has been slow to jump onto the vehicle electrification bandwagon, but that is about to end. The Swedish automaker is showing a plug-in hybrid electric concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit that is “likely to be the pinnacle expression of how we come to market with electrification strategy,” John Maloney, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, told Plugincars.com.

The XC60 PHEV concept is an SUV that allows the driver to choose which mode—pure electric, hybrid, or all gas—to drive in. It is a preview of a gasoline-powered PHEV planned for the US and China markets. Maloney wouldn’t say when we might see one here. But the V60, a diesel-electric PHEV station wagon using the same technology, will go on sale in Europe later this year.
