Forget the red carpet–2012 is all about the green carpet! That is to
say if Franca Sozzani [2] and Livia Firth (Collin Firth's
eco-activist wife) have anything to say about it.
The ever-vocal Sozzani [3] has taken to her blog [4] (where else?) to
proclaim the new standards which she says red carpet gowns should have
to adhere to–namely, that they be made with eco-friendly,
sustainable and fair-trade materials and labor.
Apparently, with the Golden Globes just days away, "many actresses
are ready to wear their outfits expressly created for this special
occasion by leading designers." In other words, many actresses (who
are your best guesses?) have committed to wearing eco-friendly
designs. The greener fashions, which we're guessing will have to be
either custom-made by big-name designers, or made by smaller,
eco-minded labels, will certainly make for a more interesting red
carpet at the Globes, and it's definitely a step in the right
direction–but will it really help to make the fashion industry, as a
whole, more eco-friendly?
Sozzani [5] certainly thinks so. The Vogue editor wrote:
"This is a 'concrete' commitment, and not just another excuse to
talk about fashion and movie stars. A good example, we all know, is
set from above and surely, if celebrities and actresses chose to
endorse this attitude and approach towards fashion to convey such a
significant message, everything would be much easier."
Certainly the industry needs to change, we're just not sure that
celebrities wearing 'green' gowns will really do the trick.
What's your take on it?
