Sales at department stores in Japan rose 0.8%

Fashion in Japan comments : sales rose thanks to the cold weather that
boosted the sales of coats, the increase in winter bonus that pushed
up the sales of luxury items and the early start of bargain.

Information : Sales at department stores in Japan rose 0.8% on the
year in December to 731.8 billion yen, marking the first increase in
six months, the Japan Department Stores Association said Thursday.

Sales at department stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area rose 0.3% to
177 billion yen, up for the first time in six months.

For all of 2011 nationwide, sales fell 2% to 6.15 trillion yen, the
15th straight annual decline.

Sales at Tokyo department stores for the full year slid 3.3% to 1.49
trillion yen, shrinking for the fourth consecutive year.
